MEP renews calls for India Security Council Seat
In statement to the European Parliament, West Midlands Labour MEP Neena Gill voiced her support for a UN Security Council seat for India.
Neena Gill said: “Proper Security Council representation for the world’s biggest democracy would represent a big step in the right direction.”
“Where is the Security Council representation for Asia? At present, that continent is represented only by China, a non-democratic country with an appalling record on human rights.”
“Where is the call for a seat for India, whose population is fast approaching that of China’s and whose political, economic and strategic power is regionally and globally significant?”
Neena’s intervention came as a result of a European Parliament debate on whether the EU should have a single seat on the Security Council.
Neena said: “There is little point in considering a Security Council seat for the EU if the whole system of representation is in question. Before thinking about the EU’s voice at the UN we need to consider how the current UN might be changed for the better.”
