Make it happen. Choose Fairtrade.
Two billion people – a third of humanity – still survive on less than $2 a day. Unfair trade rules keep them in poverty, but they face the global challenges of food shortages and climate change too. Fairtrade is a people’s movement for change that aims to tip the balance of trade in favour of poor producers. We all need Fairtrade more than ever and we all have the power to create positive change for people and planet.
Speaking at a Fairtrade conference in Wolverhampton last week, local MEP Neena Gill said in her keynote speech, “Wolverhampton is leading the way when it comes to Fairtrade, not only are the Council, Primary Care Trust , University and Colleges fully engaged in supplying Fairtrade goods to their staff and visitors, but now we have mainstream supermarkets such as the Co-op and Waitrose increasing choices to their customers.”
“We now need the Fairtrade ethos to be shared by all the developed nations, and I have and will always endeavour to press home the absolute necessity of fairness in any trade talks or delegation visits I participate in. The message is simple; we can and must ‘Make It Happen.’
Lord Turner of Bilston (Mr Fairtrade), Pat McFadden MP (Business Minister) and representatives from business and retail, as well as local children and residents where also present and contributed to a successful conference.
Well done to all who participated and organised the event.
