Midlands Chocolate Industries Speak up in Europe

Local MEP gives Midlands chocolate industries a stronger voice in Europe

Labour MEP Neena Gill has launched the high-level European Parliament Chocolate and Confectionery Club, organised in association with industry leaders from across the West Midlands region, the UK, and the EU.

Greeting MEPs and dignitaries in Brussels, Neena explained the importance of the initiative: “Today is about promoting industry in the West Midlands and with it, ethical and sustainable trade. The production of chocolate is a huge business, with global effects.”

The event, attended by MEPs from every European party, and organised in conjunction with chocolate industry representatives CAOBISCO, will strengthen ties between home-grown industries and European partners.

“Through coordinated action across the EU we can not only make this industry stronger and promote best practice but also nurture and assist one of the West Midlands most famous exports – Chocolate.” Neena continued.

“Along with CAOBISCO I am today calling on MEPs and industry leaders to address the range of issues that relate to the production of chocolate. It is no secret that along the supply chain we sometimes find instances of exploitation of workers, and unsustainable agricultural practices, which must be addressed.”

In a nod to sweet-toothed constituents, Neena added: “Another benefit of bringing chocolate and confectionery experts together is of course the production of better and tastier products for the future. I know I'm not the only one who likes a little bit of chocolate now and again!”
